The joint efforts between the Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology (Etidal) and Telegram in combating extremist content resulted in removing 18,611,232 extremist content and closing 660 extremist channels, during the second quarter of 2024.
The joint teams continue to monitor and combat the propaganda activity of the extremist content for three terrorist organizations (ISIS – Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham – Al-Qaeda), where 14,857,909 extremist contents belongs to “ISIS” were removed, and 305 channels were closed. As for Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, 3,521,969 extremist content were removed, and 281 extremist channels were closed. While 231,354 extremist content were removed, and 74 channels were closed that used by “Al-Qaeda” to broadcast its extremist messages.
We monitored a peak of activity with over 2m+ pieces of removed content on Monday June 17 2024, corresponding to Dhu al-Hijjah 11 1445 and at the beginning of Hajj period.
The second quarter of 2024, we witnessed an increase of propaganda activity by the three terrorist organizations (up by 12.82% compared to q1 2024) as we have seen in previous years and in line with Hajj season.
It is noted that the joint efforts, from February 2022 until June 2024, between the Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology (Etidal) and Telegram were able to remove 93,999,551 extremist content and close 14,193 extremist channels. The removed extremist propaganda content varied between media files in various formats (PDF), video clips and audio recordings.
